Have you ever wondered how an album is started?
How the many pieces are put together to create that final sound?
Do you listen to a song and think… how is this even possible? How did they pull this off!?
Well, today… I’m going to share some secrets.
Before recording, there is a moment of inspiration. For me, this whole thing started with an email. And a silly question…
So I’ll be honest… When I started recording I had no idea how to make a good album! Not the kind I’d dreamed of. I still remember one of the first things I sent to Louie Shelton in an email. We’d been writing each other messages back and forth after I’d sent him some demos, a few songs I’d written inspired by my musical idols.
In a nervous introduction email I wrote a silly question… ”I’d like to make an album like you did in the 70s Louie. Can you teach me exactly how that was done?”
Remember, I’ve just started my career and I’m writing to a music legend that recorded with Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, John Lennon… But this silly question must have worked!
From the very beginning it framed every decision we made. We would use real strings, real backing vocals, every note would be real music. Louie and I gathered a band of wonderful Brisbane musicians and spent four days recording drums, bass and guitars for ten songs. Instantly there was a kind of magic. The band was on fire. The journey of my debut album had begun. All thanks to a silly question.
Because this is only the beginning… Let’s just back to the present.
I want to take behind the scenes. And show you how we actually recorded two more songs from my debut album!
